In rapid-response, we defended jobs for 9,000 government scientists, engineers, lawyers and others from a hostile, anti-science White House. The budget ax, forced retirements and a hiring freeze had a cooling effect on the federal workforce tasked with protecting public health and the environment. EPA’s administrator pushed an extreme deregulation agenda while he weakened air and water pollution laws. Still, the “Save the U.S. EPA” campaign thwarted an agenda to destroy America’s foremost science and public safety Agency of the past half-century.
