SCOTUS Slashed Exxon Valdez $2.5 Billion Punitive Damages to 507.5 Million
In 1989, the Exxon Valdes was America’s worst environmental disaster. And, nearly two decades after oil spill still spoiled the environment and the economy of Prince William Sound, Alaska, the survivors took their fight to the Supreme Court. Caplan raised victims’ voices from the oil spill through “The Whole Truth Campaign,” which supported more than 32,000 fishermen and women and Alaska Natives suing Exxon to recover punitive damages. The news value was meant to ensure facts about the irreparable economic damage done to the communities of Prince William Sound would be known, and that Exxon be held accountable.
